In 1978, OMEGA launched a new, sturdily built Seamaster 120, inspired in some respects by the legendary Ploprof.
Shared features included the ratcheted bezel and above all the large, sword-shaped minutes hand painted bright orange – a color chosen for its optimal visibility when diving.
These similarities earned it the nickname “Baby Ploprof”. Several bracelet options were available, including the classic reference 1162 steel bracelet, or the reference 1247 mesh bracelet.
It also had a twin sister, Reference ST 166.0251, recognizable by its bracelet-integrated case with a more modern design. This variant also came with a silver-toned dial and applied hour-markers.
In 1848, Louis Brandt founded a company in La Chaux-de-Fonds which would become Omega. In the 1880s, the Louis Brandt & Fils company moved to its current site in Bienne and in 1894 the caliber Omega was created, which would give its name to the company. Renowned for its precise, innovative and affordable watches, it became the largest supplier of watches to the British Army during World War II. It also became the first company to time the Olympic Games in 1932. Among its range of numerous professional watches, the Speedmaster became the first watch worn on the moon in 1969.
