It is impossible to imagine a wristwatch with a more impressive backstory. The Omega Speedmaster Professional – the Moonwatch – has done things that no other timepiece has done and its been worn in places that only a few human beings have been.
None of us know today what the future of human space travel will be but I still believe in the indomitable will and courage, the passion, and the inspiration in the hearts and minds of dreamers – dreamers who want to go once again where we’ve never gone before, see things we’ve never seen before and do things that have never been done before. And when that spirit takes humankind to the limits of our imagination, I have no doubt that the Omega Speedmaster will be part of the journey.
Captain Eugene Cernan, The Last Man on the Moon
Nobody could foresee the remarkable destiny of the first chronograph with a tachymeter scale on the bezel that Omega brought out in 1957. It needed a fast name because it was designed for automobile racing teams and engineers. Its fate took a stratospheric twist in 1965 when NASA chose the model for the astronauts that would land on the Moon – a decision that propelled the Moonwatch to watchmaking’s hall of fame. 60 years later, the Speedmaster family has grown with numerous evolutions, but the Moonwatch remains almost unchanged in its shape and spirit and it is still one of the most – if not THE most – iconic timepieces ever.
After years of in-depth study and the acquisition of several dozen Speedmasters, we felt we should share with neophyte collectors what we had learned and so help them identify the different versions and their components, avoid the pitfalls and sharpen their observation. We nevertheless wanted to produce the most detailed analysis possible so that the book could serve as a reference and guide to the more experienced collector. The book aims to provide the most comprehensive overview possible of the different Speedmaster Moonwatch models, parents and variants, from the first reference of 1957 and including all the Special and Limited Series that we know of.
The new “MOONWATCH ONLY – The Ultimate Omega Speedmaster Guide” is the 3rd edition of the famous MOONWATCH ONLY book. It has been enriched with numerous new features and additional information respect to the previous edition.
A new chapter has been added and is dedicated to the Astronauts and their Speedmasters, with a lot of exclusive pictures and details.
The book has been updated with new information about components and accessories (on both vintage and modern parts, thanks to our most recent research), new tables about production volumes, new stories about famous Speedmasters, and it includes all the recent models produced until 2019.
