This was the name chosen by OMEGA in 1948 for its water-resistant models and from 1957 onwards for its full-fledged dive watches. It is thus hardly surprising that the Seamaster’s emblem is a seahorse (whose scientific name is hippocampus), a legendary figure pulling Poseidon’s chariot.
Another direct link between mythology and the Seamaster is Cronos, the titan of time and none other than Poseidon’s father.
As OMEGA’s first professional dive watch, the CK 2913 was equipped with a triple protection system ensuring exceptional reliability: a thick glass screwed onto the caseband via a retaining ring, a Naiad crown with a further-improved design, as well as a caseback screwed onto the caseband and equipped with an O-ring.
It was part of a legendary trilogy introduced that year, alongside the Speedmaster, reference CK 2915 and the Railmaster, reference CK 2914, designed to meet the growing demand for tool watches used by professionals.
With the rise of exploration during the 1960s and 70s, the Seamaster then became an essential tool during ocean expeditions, with watch designs that were functional as well as unconventional.
OMEGA often used the collection to explore its own watchmaking abilities, especially concerning the limits of depth. It’s no wonder that so many divers and scientists chose the Seamaster when navigating the uncharted corners of our planet.
This historical and technical new volume in the “ONLY” collection focuses on diving models and particularly on the Seamaster 300. With regards to the latter, the authors have adopted their characteristic in-depth analytical methodology now deployed for over a decade.
This approach will allow enable novice enthusiasts and seasoned collectors alike to delve into the intricacies of these iconic models, from their creation through to the present day.
