KRISTIAN HAAGEN

Watch Books Writer & Consultant

Kristian Haagen is 47 years old and is a man of many trades.

He has been collecting watches since the early 1990s and is the co-founder of the app 8past10 (www.8past10.com), the publisher of the e-magazine TIMEGEEKS (www.issuu.com/kristianhaagen/docs) and has written six books on watches. He has an impressive watch collection that he likes to share pictures of on his Instagram profile. Also, he works as a consultant in the auction business and recently launched his own webshop (www.kristianhaagen.com).

1. Do you remember your first watch?

Indeed I do. It was a blue dial CERTINA DS. I was nine years old. Already then I knew the “importance” of that little line of text under the 6-marker: Swiss Made. I knew I was the young proud owner of something special. Even if it was a quartz driven movement.

2. The 3 most iconic watch models?

Top Of Mind: OMEGA Speedmaster, ROLEX Submariner and HEUER Carrera. And I mention these three as they offer best legibility and perfect dial layouts.

3. A noteworthy anecdote with one of your watches?

During a very drunken watch gathering I banged a corkscrew into the bezel of my limited edition PANERAI Luminor Marina PAM195. A black DLC watch that was made for 200 Paneristis. I wanted to show how solid the coating was, but instead made a deep nick in the watch. I was not proud when I woke up the day after. But because of this incident I was awarded with the Asshat Award of the Year by fellow Paneristis during an annual collectors meeting.

4. Are you more modern or vintage?

I only have vintage BREITLING and ROLEX watches, but my PATEK PHILIPPE and A. LANGE & SOHNE watches are all modern. As a consultant in the auction business I mainly have vintage timepieces come through my hands, but I appreciate both vintage and contemporary. I guess you can say I swing both ways.

5. I love Speedmasters because …

It is one of THE most iconic watches. Also the Moon landing is for me one of the most important chapters in modern history. I remember having dinner with Buzz Aldrin on Capri many years ago. I was starstruck, but when I shared my experience with friends back home, many asked why I had dinner with Buzz Lightyear. I was so disappointed to learn that many of my friends had forgotten about the second man on the moon and instead thought I had had dinner with a cartoon character.

6. Your favorite Speedmaster?

I am the proud owner of a tropical dial 145.022 from 1969. It was delivered to the retailer a few days after my actual birthday in 1970. So that watch has a lot of emotional value. That said I dream of a 2998-1. But then again, who doesn’t?

7. A single personal item you would take with you for a long stay on the Moon?

Besides from pictures of my family I would bring an old copy of Playboy that features Cindy Crawford. Not only because I afterwards could say I went to the moon with Cindy Crawford, but also because that issue always makes me happy. And when sitting alone in a space capsule it is important to remember things that make you happy.

8. You just won the lottery. Do you first buy a sports car or call a financial advisor?

None of the above. Instead I would buy all the things I dreamt about when I was a child. Meaning cars, watches, racetracks, toys and bicycles. I would hunt them down and find them New Old Stock or in as mint condition as possible.

9. Where would you spend the next 24 hours if you had a teleporter?

In The Eagle, side by side with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

10. How many times a day do you watch … your watch?

Well, let me say it like this: I don’t check the time on my iPhone. My watch is the primary tool to tell time. So…I check my watch many times. I am after all a man who hates being late.

11. The last watch you bought?

OMEGA Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday. Not kidding.

12. What’s on your wrist today?

I am wearing my PATEK PHILIPPE Aquanaut ref. 5167. The OMEGA Speedmaster Speedy Tuesday is modeling in front of the cameras in our photo studio as we speak!

Thank you Kristian.
