About the Model

The Rolex Submariner was introduced in 1953 as one of the first purpose-built dive watches, designed to meet the needs of professional and military divers. It featured a rotating bezel for measuring immersion time and a highly legible dial with round luminous plots. Early references such as the 6204 and 6205 established the core design, combining water resistance, robustness, and clarity. The Submariner rapidly became a benchmark in dive watch design, influencing the entire category.

Introduced in 1962, the reference 5513 is the longest-produced Submariner models, remaining in production until the late 1980s. It was powered by automatic calibers 1530, then 1520 and is distinguished by its non-chronometer two-line dial. The 5513 introduced several key evolutions, including a more standardized case with crown guards, or improved water resistance (200 m). Over time, it saw major dial evolutions—from early glossy gilt dials to matte tritium dials, and later examples with white gold surrounds on the hour markers. It also reflects the broader shift in Rolex manufacturing toward more robust, industrialized sports watches, while retaining the essential no-date Submariner design that remains iconic today.

About the Brand

The story of Rolex began in London in 1905 when Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis founded Wilsdorf & Davis, a watch company that soon became known as the Rolex Watch Company. In 1919, Rolex moved its headquarters to Geneva. The brand’s success can be attributed to many “early” innovations, including the famous “Oyster” case in 1926 and the “Perpetual” self-winding movement for wristwatches in 1933. Among the most prestigious brand name in the world, Rolex has developed world-renowned collections such as the Oyster Perpetual, Datejust, Day-Date, as well as professional collections: Explorer, Submariner, GMT-Master, Daytona.
