About the Model

Patek Philippe is universally regarded as the definitive reference in the field of World Time wristwatches. The manufacture not only perfected the complication aesthetically and mechanically, but also established the canonical design language that continues to define World Time watches today.

Patek Philippe introduced its earliest World Time wristwatches in the late 1930s. These early pieces, such as the reference 96 HU, were produced in very small numbers and housed in classic Calatrava-style cases. The World Time complication reached its artistic and technical peak with the introduction of the legendary reference 2523 in the early 1950s. Produced in extremely small quantities—only a few hundred examples—the 2523 represents the golden age of Patek Philippe World Time watches. Cloisonné enamel variants, in particular, are among the most valuable wristwatches ever sold at auction.

After the 1960s, Patek Philippe temporarily ceased regular production of World Time wristwatches. The complication entered a period of dormancy, reflecting broader changes in the watch industry and the challenges of the quartz era.
The revival came in 2000 with the launch of the reference 5110, introduced to mark the new millennium. This model modernized the World Time concept while remaining faithful to the Cottier system.

Key innovations included:

  • a push-button system allowing all displays to be adjusted simultaneously,
  • improved ergonomics and legibility.
  • a more contemporary case size (37 mm).

About the Brand

In 1839, Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek founded a company in Geneva to produce pocket watches. After Czapek’s departure in 1845, the association with Adrien Philippe gave birth to the Patek Philippe brand. Patek Philippe is known for its dedication to traditional craftsmanship, innovation, and the production of highly complicated timepieces. A symbol of excellence, its models are sought-after by collectors, with vintage complications often breaking records at auctions.
