This is a series marking the 25th anniversary of a space mission that held particular importance for OMEGA, because after the rescue of Apollo 13, NASA astronauts bestowed the Snoopy Award on the company — a special distinction for firms that make a contribution to the success of the space program.
For the first time, OMEGA took the stylistic risk of applying a mission badge on one of the subdials. A similar badge had already featured on the dial of the Apollo-Soyuz limited series in 1976, but it wasn’t in a subdial.
This first model of the kind in a numbered edition of 999 watches was followed in 1997-1998 by a long series of Missions models, which are described below. Among these was another similar Apollo XIII model of which 50 were made as a part of a boxed Missions set in 1997, but were not sold individually. However the original 1995 version has the numbers of the 999 watches produced as well as a dial with tritium markers that give it a fine pale yellow color.
In 1848, Louis Brandt founded a company in La Chaux-de-Fonds which would become Omega. In the 1880s, the Louis Brandt & Fils company moved to its current site in Bienne and in 1894 the caliber Omega was created, which would give its name to the company. Renowned for its precise, innovative and affordable watches, it became the largest supplier of watches to the British Army during World War II. It also became the first company to time the Olympic Games in 1932. Among its range of numerous professional watches, the Speedmaster became the first watch worn on the moon in 1969.
