It was a surprise in July 2018 when OMEGA unveiled not one but five Speedmaster Moonwatch to celebrate two years in advance the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
Although official timekeeper of many Olympic Games since 1932, OMEGA had never produced a Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch to celebrate the world’s greatest sports event. Now it has…. and with five different models that can be purchased either individually (2,020 pieces of each) or in a set (55 pieces only) containing the five watches.
Why five different models? OMEGA wanted one model to represent each of the five rings of the Olympic flag, symbolized by the bezel color, except for the yellow color, which is represented by the tachymeter scale and not the insert itself. This is the reason why they have been nicknamed according to the ring colors.
These watches look familiar to many collectors. They were indeed inspired by previously produced Speedmasters: Gemini IV, Apollo XI 35th Anniversary, Moonphase platinum, Apollo XV 35th Anniversary and Moonphase Steel and Gold.
The casebacks are identical, with the official logo of these games, TOKYO 2020 and the Olympic rings as well as the individual bevel number.
The purpose of this document is to determine whether the constituent parts of the watch are conform to the model reference /period or not, and to value their condition and importance.
