The indication of the phases of the moon in a movement is a complication that is certainly pleasing to the eye.
This complication is usually displayed by a disk rotating beneath an opening in the dial. Lunar terminators on either side of the opening reveal and mask the moon on the disk to imitate the real phase of the moon. The disc, which has two moons on it, revolves in 59 days or two lunations of 29 days and 12 hours each. The true period of one lunar month is however 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds. This small difference accumulates to a whole day every three years.
In the Speedmaster, the moonphases can be seen in a fourth subdial at 12 o’clock, the upper part of which has been opened. Between the two moons, stars dot a blue background – a hue that can vary according to the model and even the watch. This function is matched with dates arranged radially around the subdial. A small hand points to the fixed numbers of the dates.
The first Speedmasters with moonphases were made from the end of 1985 for three years. Later, a few limited-edition versions or versions with short production runs were sold between 1999 and 2003. Finally a conventional black version replaced them from 2003.
