About the Model

The Apnea model is a special version in the Diver 300M Chronograph collection.

It has a chronograph seconds hand but no hours and minutes hands. Instead, seven apertures on the dial display the progress of a silver-gray (or black) and red disk. Each aperture represents one minute, meaning a total of seven minutes for the seven disks to turn red and a further seven for them to turn gray, thus amounting to a total of 14 minutes: a limit deemed critical by apneist Jaques Mayol, who collaborated on the development of this model. He passed away in 2001 before it was released and the Apnea is dedicated to him – featuring a back engraved with his silhouette depicting him with a dolphin, a nod to his “Dolphin Man” nickname.

The unidirectional rotating bezel features a scale graduated from 0 to 60, with the first 14 minutes in red. The minutes hand is used to measure dive times. Note that there is no helium valve. Pictured here with a silver-toned dial and rubber strap, it was also available with a black dial and/or steel bracelet.

About the Brand

In 1848, Louis Brandt founded a company in La Chaux-de-Fonds which would become Omega. In the 1880s, the Louis Brandt & Fils company moved to its current site in Bienne and in 1894 the caliber Omega was created, which would give its name to the company. Renowned for its precise, innovative and affordable watches, it became the largest supplier of watches to the British Army during World War II. It also became the first company to time the Olympic Games in 1932. Among its range of numerous professional watches, the Speedmaster became the first watch worn on the moon in 1969.
