CARTIER Tank Normale
78092 “Paris Dial”

Sold

The reference number of this rare piece is 78092: the engraving on the caseback is the watch’s reference number (78092) plus serial number (xxxx). Pieces with the reference number 78093 also exist but are the ladies’ version and have smaller dimensions.

The watch is fitted with an aftermarket yellow gold bracelet (not signed Cartier), which had probably been purchased separately by a previous owner.

The Paris signed dial is in perfect condition, and the case shows little signs of wear but has probably never been polished.

A rare opportunity for any Cartier aficionados!

About the Model

Cartier introduced the Tank in 1917. The design of the Tank was inspired by the Renault FT-17 tanks: Cartier took the look of this tank’s treads and applied it to the lugs, which were integrated via brancards into the case itself.

While the famous Tank Louis Cartier was introduced in 1922, and the Tank Cintrée in 1921, but actually the very first Tank from 1917 was the Tank Normale which is, to put it very simply, a square Tank.

Over the last few decades, there have been many iterations of the various Tank models, but  the Tank Normale has been surprisingly absent from the Cartier catalogue. Notably, there was no CPCP release of the watch. Only in Spring 2023, Cartier launched a new Tank Normale within the CPCP collection.

This is the reason why it is extremely difficult to find a vintage Tank Normale on the market today, because it has been produced for a very short period of time and probably in low quantities.
