About the Model

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is the definitive luxury sport watch. Designed by Gérald Genta in 1972, its popularity kickstarted the integrated stainless steel sport watch trend that’s taken over 21st-century watch design.

The name Royal Oak came from a historical tree in England where King Charles II hid from Cromwell’s army in 1651. That tree ended up saving King Charles’s life and became a historic political English symbol. The name was applied to no fewer than four British naval ships between 1769 and 1914, which is where this watch comes into play. The octagonal bezel was inspired by the porthole of a naval ship, hence the name Royal Oak.

Shortly after the introduction of the original Jumbo ref. 5402, Audemars Piguet experimented with a few mid-size versions of the design. Th reference 25594 is a direct descendant of the Royal Oak Day Date ref. 5572 created in 1983. Developed at the same time but presented a year later, the 25594 adds a moonphase aperture.

It proved an immediate success, with 333 units sold in 1984, and more than 600 the following year. Nevertheless, what sets this Royal Oak apart from all others is its longevity. Within the overall history of the Royal Oak, this is the only model to have remained in the catalogue for more than 20 years, from 1985 to 2006 (source: Audemars Piguet).

The 36 mm diameter placed this Royal Oak at the heart of the collection. Over a 20-year period, the catalogues feature less than 10 dial variations, including all materials. From a technical standpoint, Calibre 2124/2825 gradually gave way between 1997 and 2002 to Calibre 2224/2825, which equipped the last 2,000 or so watches.

Just under half of the 6,534 Royal Oak Day Date Moon Phase 25594 were crafted in steel (ST), 27% combined steel and yellow gold (SA) and 24% were produced in yellow gold (BA). Only 19 white gold (BC) watches are listed, and only one in pink gold (OR), sold in 1997 (source: Audemars Piguet).
