About the model
The Omega Speedmaster, born in 1957, is one of the most iconic wristwatches ever produced. Since 1965, it has been the choice of space programs for over half a century and has been associated with some of mankind’s greatest space adventures, earning it the name The Moonwatch.
Naturally, beyond its professional use for more than sixty years, the Speedmaster, with its incredible history and its timeless design, has appealed to a much wider public throughout the world.
In 1985, Omega introduced the first steel Speedmaster with a sapphire display caseback to display the movement, the caliber 863 with luxury finish. This was a limited series of 1’000 copies, with an individual number engraved on the caseback bezel.
Then Omega presented a second series, numbered A 0001 to A 1000, and displaying a movement with gold-plated parts. The engravings on the caseback are “FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON – APOLLO XI – SPEEDMASTER – A 0xxx”. The A preceding the individual number usually stands for a second series.
After these two numbered editions, a 3rd “Apollo XI” series with display back remained in the catalog, but in unnumbered production.
