This watch is a mint example of Omega Speedmaster ST 145.022-78.

This dial is called Tall & Open S in the MOONWATCH ONLY book, a nickname referring to the height and shape of the capital S of Speedmaster: it is very tall / long and its ends are curly, but much less than the Tall & Closed S variant, produced at the end of the 80s. One can note also the final r of Speedmaster with a low final loop.

The bezel version appeared in 1970, replacing the DON 90 version, famous for its accented È in TACHYMÈTRE. The two main differences with the DON 90 are 1) the first E of TACHYMETRE is not accented and 2) the dot marking 90 is no longer on a diagonal above the number, but next to it. This version, also called DNN, was introduced during the production of the reference ST 145.022-69 and is correct for a reference 145.022-78.

The watch is in mint condition and is fitted with its original 1171/633 steel bracelet.

About the model

The Omega Speedmaster, born in 1957, is one of the most iconic wristwatches ever produced. Since 1965, it has been the choice of space programs for over half a century and has been associated with some of mankind’s greatest space adventures, earning it the name The Moonwatch.

Naturally, beyond its professional use for more than sixty years, the Speedmaster, with its incredible history and its timeless design, has appealed to a much wider public throughout the world.

The reference ST 145.022 is the successor of ST 145.012 and the first fitted with the caliber 861.

During the first years of production of the ST 145.022, the year of manufacture was engraved inside the caseback: 68, 69, 71, 74, 76 and the last one 78. After the 145.022-78 (meaning from circa 1982), classification is no longer based on the case reference, but according to the OMEGA code or to visible criteria.
