Produced from around late 1969 to 1988, reference 6263 is perhaps known as the most iconic Daytona model: it is the archetype that collectors think of when the word “Vintage Daytona” is used.
Integrating the screw-down pushers of its predecessor, as well as the improved Caliber 727 movement beating at a higher rate, reference 6263 and its metal bezel sibling reference 6265 represent the most evolved manual winding Daytonas, marketed as waterproof down to 165 ft (50 meters) thanks to the screw-down Oyster pushers and case. For collectors, references 6263 and 6265 are also amongst the most interesting references to collect because Rolex created a wide variety of dial designs for the model.
Throughout its over two decades of production, not only did Rolex create many special-order pieces during this period for Royal families or the army, but it also experimented with different dial configurations, making Daytonas from this period a particular joy to collect.
While the majority of both references 6263 and 6265 were cased in stainless steel, more limited quantities were cased in yellow gold. Starting from the early 1970s, Rolex began to power its gold Oyster Cosmograph watches with chronometer-certified movements. Whilst earlier dials bore the inscription“Rolex Oyster Cosmograph” only and this iteration was nicknamed “Three Liner” by collectors, later models featured a different dial layout that referenced the chronometer-tested movement and displayed “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” on the dial.
