About the Model

In 1952, the US Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (abbreviated AOPA) contacted Breitling to develop a chronograph that would allow its members to perform all kinds of calculations necessary in flight: average speed, fuel consumption, distance, conversion kilometers in miles.

These challenging requirements were made possible by a logarithmic slide rule integrated into a rotating bezel. The Navitimer was born, with presumably the first examples produced in 1954. Since then, Breitling has always maintained a very strong link with the aeronautical world.

After a difficult period (mid 1970s – mid 1980s), marked by the rise of quartz and digital displays, as well as the closure of several factories, the Swiss watch industry managed to restructure its production system and revive the mechanical watch.

In 1984, Breitling marketed a new Chronomat, followed in 1985 by a new mechanical manual-wound Navitimer, Reference 81600, with the new winged Breitling logo. It was worn by French singer Serge Gainsbourg.

The self-winding Old Navitimer was launched in 1989 and was marketed for more than ten years. This period marked the beginning of a great diversification of models, in particular with several commemorative watches, as well as the integration of several complications.

In 1995, Breitling launched a rare numbered 250-piece series produced for the Japanese market. The individual number is inscribed on the dial and a transparent caseback reveals the manual-wound Breitling Caliber 11 (on a Lemania 1873 base).
