A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO SEAMASTER “JAMES BOND” MODELS – Part 1

Since 1995 and the release of GoldenEye, an OMEGA Seamaster has adorned the wrist of cinema’s most famous spy: James Bond, Agent 007. Whether the Diver 300M, the Planet Ocean 600M, or the Aqua Terra 150M, the Seamaster accompanies Bond on his most perilous missions as well as in his most elegant moments. Far more than a mere accessory, his watch has become a true ally, saving the agent in countless situations thanks to the built-in gadgets developed by Q Lab: detonators, lasers, grappling hooks, and explosive charges.

Two actors portrayed James Bond during this period: Pierce Brosnan from 1995 to 2002, and Daniel Craig since 2006.

Naturally, both actors wore these Seamasters on screen and during promotional events, but it is worth emphasizing that this partnership is ultimately built around the character himself, making Bond a fictional brand ambassador. OMEGA made full use of this association through major international advertising campaigns accompanying each film release.

At the same time, OMEGA developed several commemorative limited editions, distinct from the watches seen on screen. However, Spectre (2015) and No Time to Die (2021) marked a change: Bond wore a special edition identical to the one released commercially.

We have chosen to distinguish between two clearly defined categories and therefore to split this analysis in two articles:

  • Part 1. Seamaster models worn by James Bond in the films,
  • Part 2. Seamaster models produced as commemorative editions.

PART 1 – WORN BY BOND, JAMES BOND

GoldenEye (1995)

Seamaster Diver 300M Quartz

The first model to appear on screen was worn by Pierce Brosnan in GoldenEye (1995). It was a 41 mm OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M Quartz, reference 2541.80, fitted with a five-link steel bracelet.

The origin of the collaboration between OMEGA and the James Bond franchise can be traced back to costume designer Linday Hemming, who was convinced that Bond, as a commander of the Royal Navy, needed a watch that was at the same time elegant, functional and had a link with the liquid element.

Tomorrow Never Dies / The World Is Not Enough / Die Another Day (1997/1999/2001)

Seamaster Diver 300M Chronometer

In the next film, Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), James Bond chose the automatic version of the Diver 300M, once again in a 41 mm case: reference 2531.80. For this instalment, the Seamaster was equipped with a detonator used to trigger an explosive charge.

In The World Is Not Enough (1999), the watch featured a built-in miniature grappling cable, deployed from the bezel.

Finally, in Die Another Day (2002), Bond used a laser concealed within the bezel to escape from an ice palace; the watch also incorporated a detonator.

Casino Royale (2006)

Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial Chronometer & Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial Chronometer

In Casino Royale (2006), which introduced Daniel Craig as 007, the iconic gadgets largely disappear, and the two watches James Bond wears were reduced to their primary function — telling the time — as he wryly explains to Vesper Lind.

The first is a Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial Chronometer (ref. 2222.80), worn in the more formal scenes, with a reduced size of 36.25 mm. For the action sequences, Bond opted for a Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial Chronometer, arguably the ultimate watch for a secret agent. Despite its imposing 45.5 mm diameter case, it conveys a distinctly stealthy aesthetic, with its black dial, bezel, and rubber strap.

Quantum of Solace (2008)

Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial Chronometer

In Quantum of Solace (2008), James Bond opted for a more compact version: a 42 mm Planet Ocean 600M on a steel bracelet. Aside from its reduced size and bracelet configuration, it remains essentially identical to the model worn in Casino Royale, housing the same Caliber 2500…and still not featuring any gadget.

Skyfall (2012)

Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial Chronometer & Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Co-Axial Chronometer

Four years later, Bond returned in Skyfall, once again wearing two Seamasters, as in Casino Royale.

The first was a 42 mm Planet Ocean, reference 232.30.42.21.01.001, part of the new generation introduced in 2011 and powered by the Manufacture Caliber 8500, with a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel.

The second was an Aqua Terra 150M Co-Axial Chronometer, reference 231.10.39.21.03.001. Measuring 39 mm and featuring a blue “teak” dial, it stands out for its understated elegance. It is the watch Bond wore during his journey to Scotland, to the land of his ancestors.

Neither watch received any modifications from Q Branch.

Spectre (2015)

Seamaster 300 Heritage Master Co-Axial & Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Master Co-Axial

For the first time, Bond wore a Seamaster that would be released as a limited edition of 7,007 pieces. This watch also marked the return of Q Branch, which equipped him with a brand-new model: the Seamaster 300 Heritage, reference 233.32.41.21.01.001. In the film, it conceals a detonator with an integrated explosive charge.

Inspired by the 1957 Seamaster 300, this modern reinterpretation is powered by the Master Co-Axial Caliber 8400. To improve legibility on screen, OMEGA enlarged both the logo and the brand name on the dial. It also features a “lollipop” seconds hand and a NATO strap, in a clear nod to its military heritage.

As in Skyfall, the second OMEGA is an Aqua Terra 150M, equipped with the new Master Chronometer Caliber 8500. Like its predecessor, it features a blue “teak” dial, but is distinguished in particular by the absence of a metal frame around the date window and by its increased size of 41.5 mm.

No Time to Die (2021)

Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Master Co-Axial & Seamaster Diver 300M Master Chronometer

In the opening sequence, 007 wears a blue Aqua Terra Master Co-Axial, largely similar to the one seen in Spectre. One of the 5 Aqua Terra watches used during the film was on sale by Christie’s in 2022 (www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-6385187).

He also uses a special edition developed in close collaboration with Daniel Craig: a titanium Seamaster Diver 300M to be released as an unnumbered edition. This 42 mm model, with its tropical brown dial and bezel, is fitted with a matching titanium mesh bracelet. Devoid of a date display, it features fictitious military engravings on the caseback, including the Royal Navy code 0552, as well as the Broad Arrow (pheon) symbol on the dial. For the purposes of the script, Q equips it with an EMP mechanism capable of disabling electronic devices via electromagnetic waves.
