ALEXIS

Sales Manager, Watch Collector

Alexis a.k.a. Kovpics is a 33 years old guy living in Switzerland and working in Cyber Security. He’s interested in tons of different things but his real hobbies are in vintage and modern endurance racing, single malts and mechanical watches.

Networker and socializer, he is always up for meeting people or organizing events to bring people together.

He has spent a bit less than a decade learning, researching and collecting watches and the OMEGA Speedmaster has been his main focus from the very beginning. As per today, in collaboration with the OMEGA Museum, Alexis is working on a website to share some information about the digital Quartz Speedmasters from the late seventies he has managed to put together while collecting.

1. Do you remember your first watch?

Oh yes I do. In fact, it wasn’t a proper watch. Back in the early nineties when I was a kid, I’ve got this DIY mechanical clock as a gift from my uncle.

I was very happy about it and have spent a lot of time on observing the movement and trying to understand how it works. Very soon, my curiosity pushed me to apply some modifications to the movement that I was convinced to be strong improvements. Unfortunately my excess of enthusiasm in combination with a total lack of knowledge led to a broken gift and – obviously – tears…

2. The 3 most iconic watch models?

OMEGA Speedmaster, ZENITH El Primero Chronograph, AUDEMARS PIGUET Royal Oak. But the Speedmaster has by far the biggest place in my heart.

3. A noteworthy anecdote with one of your watches?

Back in 2015, when most of Speedmaster collectors were still considering the “Ultraman” Speedmaster to be a regular 145.012 model fitted with a wrong chrono hand, I’ve had a chance to buy a wonderful full set with box and papers from an american dealer who just got it in Texas, directly from the son of the first owner. Some months later, the OMEGA Museum confirmed this watch to be a legit model produced in a very small batch back in summer 1968; some other months later MOONWATCH ONLY was publishing a whole study about this specific model…

4. Are you more modern or vintage?

I have started collecting with a birth year OMEGA Speedmaster, a gold and steel model made for the German market in the eighties, followed by several limited editions from the 2000s such as Gemini IV, Apollo 35th Panda, Japan Racing etc…

In 2017, I decided to focus exclusively on vintage and have operated an important shift to my collection accordingly.

5. I love Speedmasters because …

For me, the OMEGA Speedmaster is the “Porsche 911” of watches. It has a timeless design, it is one of the most versatile watches ever and it has an amazing history…

And exactly like with 911s, only people who know a bit about Speedmasters might be able to distinguish a regular daily beater from a highly collectible piece of history.

On top of that, I am totally amazed about the way those watches are aging. I love them in all original and worn condition, I would love to hear to all the stories they could tell.

6. Your favorite Speedmaster?

I got to love the elegant look and feel of the straight lugs models but my heart belongs to the Ultraman and I fully assume this bias.

7. A single personal item you would take with you for a long stay on the Moon?

My digital camera. I assume after the long stay I’ll be able to get back here and share all the photographs I’ve made up there, isn’t it?!

8. You just won the lottery. Do you first buy a sports car or call a financial advisor?

According to statistics, 100% of winners have played. Since I never play lottery, I’m afraid I will never have to deal with such a dilemma… but I guess I’d opt for the car – you live only once and I guess I will find that Ferrari 250 GT SWB faster than the financial advisor I will fully trust!

9. Where would you spend the next 24 hours if you had a teleporter?

On the Moon, with no hesitation!

10. How many times a day do you watch … your watch?

It depends… Mostly to admire the object I’m wearing. Or to make a wrist shot… and another one. Sometimes also to check the time… True story!!

11. The last watch you bought?

An absolute time capsule OMEGA Flightmaster 145.036 third generation with professional hands and the rare box, papers, tag, sticker… A real collector set.

12. What’s on your wrist today?

Today I am wearing a first generation OMEGA Flightmaster 145.013 from 1969. I have ignored the Flightmasters for several years of collecting and it’s only recently I’ve been bitten by that bug. I mean, look at that! What not to love? A Speedmaster movement (cal.861) with the GMT function added and a superb color touch…

Thank you Alexis.
